The battles you encounter as a child of God are not always about you; often they are about
the future of the seeds you are planting in your life, whether they are
financial seeds or other ways you give into the Kingdom of Jesus Christ. Many of the seeds that you plant, you will see the harvest, but then there may be some that appear to be lost, the results
of which you will never see in your lifetime, but seeds which have a lifetime of their own, providing future harvests long after the seed planter is gone.
Such is the case with one man named Edward Kimball. You probably are asking; who is Edward Kimball? Not many people have heard of him, nor the legacy of the seed he has planted in the Kingdom of Jesus Christ, nor the legacy of that seed’s continuing harvest until this very day.
Edward Kimball lived in Massachusetts in the 19th century. He attended a small Congregational Church in Boston where he was a Sunday School teacher for a class of older teens. Dwight, one of the teens, was a bit resistant to the teaching of the Word and rebellious and when his application for church membership was turned down by the church he stopped attending the class. Dwight had only gone to the church because his uncle had required him to do so as part of an arrangement to bring Dwight from his home in Northfield Massachusetts to work in his uncle’s shoe store in
Boston. Kimball pursued Dwight and one day went to the shoe store where he found Dwight working and alone in the store. He talked with the troubled youth
whose father had died when he was four leaving Dwight’s mother and siblings
struggling to get along. Kimball talked to him about how much God loved him and had a plan for his life and the recalcitrant young man surrendered his life to Jesus Christ and allowed Kimball
to continue to disciple him in the ways of the Lord and teach him the Word of God. Kimball’s persistence and continued faithfulness caused the Angels to sing as Dwight turned his life over to the one who gave His life for him and entered the ministry.
Dwight L. Moody, that 17 year old shoe salesman went on to become one of the greatest
evangelists of the 19th century. At one of Dwight’s crusades in 1870, he reached out to a man named J. Wilbur Chapman and led him to Christ. Chapman later became instrumental in developing a ministry to the down and out people of Chicago. The Pacific Garden Mission is still reaching out to people in Chicago for Christ today. Chapman continued the legacy and also himself led to the Lord and mentored a young professional baseball player with the Chicago White Sox by the name of Billy Sunday.
Billy Sunday became a great evangelist himself holding revival meetings all over the United
States up and until the late 1920’s. At one of his crusades a young man attending by the name of Mordecai Ham surrendered his life to Christ. In 1901 Mordecai Ham entered the ministry as an
evangelist holding revivals as his mentor Billy Sunday did. He also started one of the first radio
ministries in the United States.
Mordecai Ham held a revival meeting in Charlotte North Carolina in 1934 and it was at this
meeting that Ham replanted the legacy seed of Edward Kimball. A young man by the name of Billy, just like Ham’s mentor was at that meeting that night and he too followed in the footsteps of his predecessors, Ham, Sunday, Chapman, Moody and Kimball in this generational seed harvest.
Many people today including myself owe a debt of gratitude to the ministry of Billy Graham
and continue to plant seeds for a harvest of souls continuing the legacy of the
seed planted by faithfulness of Edward Kimball. We can’t only help but wonder who it was who planted the seed of faith in Edward Kimball; perhaps his mother, his father, a friend, a pastor, perhaps even a stranger…we do not know.
Whoever it was, like Kimball, they continue to earn eternal crowns in the next world after
they have departed this world as the legacy of the seed continues.
We must therefore be mindful that the seeds we plant in faith today are capable of a
harvest beyond our wildest expectations, the rewards of which we may or may not
see in this life but which await us in the coming Kingdom!
